Leading South Australian company Kennewell CNC Machining, based in the regional city of Murray Bridge, has invested in the latest CMM equipment from WENZEL as part of a significant upgrade and enhancement to its quality assurance capabilities.
Brett Kennewell, managing director of Kennewell CNC Machining, commented,” We wanted to invest in the latest technology available and, through the auspices of a government grant, we were able to purchase a range of the newest metrology equipment, including the WENZEL CMM. The Grant, part of the Sovereign Industrial Capability Priority (SICP) Grant program, saw Kennewell successful with their application. This CMM is the cornerstone of our new metrology capability and is essential for the upcoming defence and space projects.”
WENZEL Technology
The WENZEL LH series of CMMs is manufactured in the WENZEL factory in Germany and represents the latest developments in CMM equipment technology.
With granite construction on all three axes, the LH series has high mechanical precision measuring. Renishaw sensors and low air consumption mean longer intervals between calibrations, lowering the overall cost of ownership.
The LH Series is available with switching sensor systems, 3-axis and 5-axis scanning heads, and optical sensors, making it one of the most versatile models in the WENZEL CMM range.
WENZEL CMM Equipment in Australia
Many WENZEL CMMs are in use in Australia across various sectors, including general manufacturing and gear manufacturing in Melbourne, South Australia, and the aerospace sector in Sydney. The Kennewell CMM now joins this growing list of installations.
Kennellwell CMM
The WENZEL CMM at Kennewell is an LH 87-1000 bridge DCC CMM with Renishaw peripherals, including controller, PH10M+ motorised indexing head, TP20 touch trigger probe, and WM | Quartis metrology software.
With a measuring volume of 800, 1,000, and 700mm in X, Y, and Z and a single-point uncertainty and repeatability of 2.2 µm, according to DIN EN ISO-10360-Parts 2 and 5, with the TP20, the WENZEL LH is an exceptionally accurate and repeatable 3D measuring system.
Service and Support for CMM Equipment
WENZEL’s Australian and New Zealand distributor Met Optix, based in Melbourne, supplied the system. A service technician from WENZEL Asia Pte in Singapore installed and commissioned the CMM and provided software training.
Asked about his experience with the service and support from Met Optix and WENZEL, Brett commented that ..”The CMM has been fantastic, everything that the team promised they have delivered; we are delighted with the quality of the WENZEL product, and the training from Eugene Chia of WENZEL was outstanding; we now know a lot more about CMM programming with the WENZEL Quartis software and how easy it is to use, and I’m sure that our customers will appreciate the extra capabilities that we can now offer.”
Brett said the new CMM equipment system is part of a significant upgrade in our QC and metrology capabilities. Other equipment purchased included a TESA-Hite 700 height gauge and new Taylor Hobson Surtronic S100 surface roughness measuring equipment. A new vertical shaft measuring machine from Vici-Vision in Italy, the first in Australia, will lead us to look for new parts to quote and manufacture for our customers. Thanks to the WENZEL team in Singapore and David Eldridge from Met Optix for all your help on this great project and for making it happen for us.

Major Victorian University purchases Bruker Alicona InfiniteFocus G6 system
Bruker Alicona InfiniteFocus G6 system, the first in Australia, has been purchased by a major Victorian university for their new material sciences laboratory adding to the existing Alicona capacity of earlier generation Alicona G4 and G5 systems.
The Bruker Alicona InfiniteFocus G6 system was first introduced to the market at the 2022 Control Show in Germany, and since then over 100 systems have been sold worldwide. The InfiniteFocs G6 system represents a step change in technology over the previous G5 model that it replaces in speed of measurement, increased z-height operation, and the introduction of the new MetMax metrology software from Alicona.
Alicona InfiniteFocus G6 System in 3-Axis Configuration
MetMax is a new approach to measurement software from Alicona. As well as providing full GD&T capabilities, the software can now create measurement plans for automatic measurement routines that can be saved and recalled for future repetitive measurement tasks.
InfiniteFocusG6 is an accurate, fast, and universal optical 3D measuring instrument for tolerances in the micron and sub-micron measurement range. Components are measured area-based and with high resolution independent of size, material, geometry, weight, and surface finish. Several proven and new features combine the functionalities of a roughness measuring system (Ra, Rq, Rz/Sa, Sq, Sz) with the characteristics of a coordinate measuring machine.
The Brand New InfiniteFocusG6
Unrivalled measurement performance
Groundbreaking user experience
Future-proof technology
Smart Design
The InfiniteFocus G6 System features several proven and yet new features that combine the functionalities of a roughness measuring system with the characteristics of a coordinate measuring machine. These include
5-axis metrology
SmartFlash and Real3D
The integrated SmartFlash technology ensures high-resolution measurement of smooth, reflective, and highly polished surfaces. Real3D turns individual measurements into a complete 360° data set.
MetMax Software
Users specify measurements already in the CAD model of a component. A Digital Twin combined with a virtual measurement simulation enables the safe operation of the measuring instrument.
Vertical Focus Probing
The latest technology enables the optical, lateral probing of components. Users measure holes and vertical flanks (>90°).
A leading producer of seals for the oil and gas sector turned to Met Optix and Taylor Hobson for new roundness measuring capabilities for their new advanced seal division in Melbourne. The latest Talyrond roundness measurement system from Taylor Hobson was chosen for the application, based on the customer’s overseas experience.
The system was installed and commissioned in November 2022, by a Taylor Hobson service engineer from Singapore. Full onsite training and support services were provided to the customer.
One of our key customers – Australian Metrology and Calibration (AMC) in Adelaide, recently installed two new systems supplied by Met Optix – a Taylor Hobson Talyrond TR130/131 Roundness Measuring System and a Gauge Calibration and Length Measuring System from Microrep in Italy.
This was to equip their growing capabilities and prepare their business for future opportunities in the defence sector in South Australia. We wanted to replace some of our older equipment with the latest technologies in terms of roundness measurement and gauge calibration, and Met Optix had the right products and skilled personnel to help us with our upgrade journey.
‘These systems, along with an earlier purchase of a large format Starrett vision system, also from Met Optix, give us the confidence to tackle any project, large or small.
